Yup.. even children can have them. And Aliya is considered one of them. She has got her chicken pox about 3 years ago when she was around 1 year old. Apparently, based on our family doctor's explanation as well as what I could find with the help of mr google, shingles and chicken pox comes from the same viral family, the varicella zoster virus. Shingles are common in adults but children can be infected too especially if the child has had chicken pox when they are 1 year old or younger (like Aliya)
There are so many myth floating around about this viral infection. The most common one is that if the rash which will appear on 1 side of the torso is joined in the middle, it will mean death to the person infected (kayap ular). I was assured by the doctor as well as from my extensive reading on this virus that death is rare. Also, there is this perception that shingles can only be cured via traditional (or alternative) medicine and not with modern medication. Ridiculous ain't it?
Shingles (or herpes zoster) is characterised by a blister-like rash. Most readings says its painful but looking at Aliya, it doesn't seem painful. She's in mild pain some of the time and some itchiness around the blistered areas and very painful to the touch, but that's about it. The blisters are on one 1 side of the torso but can also attack upper body or the face area. Its usually treated with antiviral medications and cream based medicine and the symptom will last for about a week to a month depending on the antibody of the person. But for children its generally painless and last a shorter period as compared to adults.
Lets hope so. Its painful to her and to me everytime I have to dab some spirit onto the rash and put the oitment cream on her.
